Most acupuncturists use a procedure called the Four Examinations to make a diagnosis. These involve asking questions, looking, hearing, and feeling with the hands and fingers. As well as what you tell me I base a large part of my diagnosis on what I pick up with my hands. This includes taking the pulse on both wrists, and palpating areas on the back, legs and abdomen. The abdomen is especially important for confirming the findings on the pulse, and may present with tight or painful areas. These areas usually feel better after treatment.
Sessions vary in length from thirty minutes to an hour, depending on what needs to be done. I usually start on the front of your body, then work on your back. The points and techniques may differ from week to week, but the treatment aim will be consistent: I always try to address the core imbalance or root problem first, and then give treatment to alleviate the symptoms, or branch. Treating root and branch is an important idea in traditional medicine, as symptoms are thought to be an expression of the core.
